Moveable collateral registry in Malawi boosts MSME access to bank credit.
The study looked at whether a new system for using movable assets as collateral in Malawi helped small businesses get more bank loans. They found that while the system did increase access to credit for these businesses, banks still prefer real estate as collateral. Banks mainly focus on whether a business can repay the loan when deciding to lend money. The study suggests that providing financial training and credit guarantees to small businesses could help them access the new system and get more bank loans.
