Refrigerants Underestimated as Potent Climate Threat, Urgent Action Needed
Refrigerant gases known as HFCs are powerful greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. Current ways of estimating their warming effects may be underestimating the impact. Researchers show that calculating HFC emissions like CO2 underestimates their warming potential by 4-17 times in 2030 and 3-5 times in 2050. Even if emissions are reduced as per the Kigali Amendment, there's a warming peak in 2046 that is missed when using CO2-equivalent measures. This means we need to be more careful in how we measure the effects of these chemicals to better understand their impact on global warming.
