Grassroots movements challenge autocracy in Tajikistan through civil society.
The article explores civil society in South Africa, Tajikistan, and Argentina in relation to democratization. While South Africa and Argentina have strong civil societies supporting democracy, Tajikistan remains autocratic with a weakening civil society. At the grassroots level, a mix of traditional and internet-based organizations play a role in local participation and ties with other civil society groups. This shows a complex relationship between local democratization and national autocracy.
