Genetic barriers prevent new cichlid species in Lake Victoria
A cichlid species in Lake Victoria, Astatoreochromis alluaudi, did not evolve into new species despite living in different habitats. Researchers found two distinct groups of this cichlid based on their genes and habitats. These groups have different physical traits that are passed down to their offspring. Surprisingly, even though they look and live differently, they do not choose mates based on these differences. This lack of preference for specific traits may be why this cichlid species has not evolved into new species.
