New growing media blend boosts lettuce growth without harming environment.
The researchers wanted to make plant growing materials without using much peat. They mixed coir with compost and biochar to see how it affected lettuce seedlings. They found that mixes with 12% compost and 10% biochar had good results for seed germination and seedling growth. These mixes also had normal physicochemical characteristics. Using these mixes can reduce peat use and make use of renewable resources. The lettuce leaves also had different total phenol content depending on the mix used.
