Farmers in the South Can Boost Crop Yields with Innovative Cowpea-Wheat Rotation
The study explored the potential of growing cowpea and wheat together in the southern United States. By using a computer model and 80 years of weather data, researchers found that double-cropping cowpea and wheat can be successful, especially when no nitrogen is applied. Planting cowpea on July 15 and wheat on November 30 resulted in the most beneficial yields. However, if nitrogen is used, it's better to grow wheat alone. Overall, wheat yields were higher when grown alone, while cowpea yields were higher when grown alone as well. The timing of planting had a significant impact on the success of the double-cropping system.
