Accurate Flood Forecasting Empowers Moroccan Communities to Safeguard Lives and Livelihoods
The researchers used GIS and remote sensing to model rainfall-runoff in the Nekkor watershed in Northern Morocco. They used the HEC-HMS model to simulate the impacts of flooding and evaluated its performance. By calibrating the model with data from 2003 to 2007 and validating it from 2009 to 2012, they found that the model accurately predicted peak discharge, flood volume, and timing of peak discharge. The results show that the model can help decision makers manage water resources and reduce flood risks in the watershed.
