New Onion Varieties Boost Photosynthesis, Produce Larger, Healthier Bulbs.
Onions that show fewer symptoms of a disease called Iris yellow spot have higher rates of photosynthesis. Researchers studied different onion breeding lines and found that those with reduced disease symptoms had better photosynthesis rates compared to susceptible varieties. This higher photosynthesis rate led to larger and more marketable bulbs at harvest. The study suggests that maintaining a high photosynthesis rate may be linked to lower disease symptoms in onions.
