Exclusive human rights jurisdiction of Nigerian court may restrict access to justice
The National Industrial Court of Nigeria faced challenges with its jurisdiction until the Third Alteration Act in 1999. This Act recognized the court as superior and gave it exclusive jurisdiction over labor matters. However, expanding its jurisdiction to include human rights issues related to labor disputes raised new concerns. Research shows that this expansion could limit access to justice. To address this, it is suggested that state high courts should have concurrent jurisdiction in non-labor matters, and more divisions of the National Industrial Court should be created.
