Hierarchical linear models are used in multi-regional clinical trials to account for shared factors among patients in the same region. A random intercept model helps control errors in testing treatment effects when regional differences are minimal. Comparing this model with one using a random slope, criteria for selecting the best model depend on the variation in treatment effects across regions. Simulation studies were used to determine these criteria.
