Pet owners willing to pay premium for welfare-friendly pet food
Pet owners in the US are willing to pay more for pet food that is labeled as animal welfare-friendly. A study found that many pet owners have low knowledge about farm animal welfare but are interested in it. They showed a positive willingness to pay for pet food that supports animal welfare. Younger respondents, women, and cat owners were more willing to pay extra compared to older respondents, men, and dog owners. Income level did not affect willingness to pay. Creating pet food with welfare-friendly ingredients can help improve farm animal welfare by using by-products from human food and educating people about animal production through pet food packaging.
