New model reveals how genes evolve independently, shaping rugged landscapes
The NK model was extended to study how genes interact and control traits independently. The degree of pleiotropy and epistasis can evolve separately and are not solely determined by the ruggedness of the landscape. Genes can change how they interact over evolution, and the complexity of interactions decreases with ruggedness. The model showed minor adaptations due to limited mutation periods.
