Florida apple growers face challenges due to insufficient winter cold.
Apple varieties like 'Red Delicious' and 'Golden Delicious' don't grow well in Florida because they don't get enough cold in the winter. This makes them grow slowly, weakly, and produce poor fruit. The researchers found that local apple selections in northern Florida used to be of medium to poor quality and only fruited well after cold winters. This information was shared in a 4-page fact sheet published by the Horticultural Sciences Department in May 2019.
