Nitrogen limits future carbon storage, threatening climate goals
Terrestrial carbon storage is influenced by nitrogen levels, which could become more important with increased CO2 levels. Different models show variability in how they simulate nitrogen cycling, affecting their predictions of future carbon storage. Models tend to overestimate certain nitrogen-related factors in tropical regions and underestimate them in temperate areas. More data on nitrogen processes is needed to improve model accuracy and better predict the future of carbon storage on land.
