Peasants in Bangladesh defy social norms, claim high prestige status.
Peasants in two villages in Bangladesh were studied to see how they view their social status. Even though they may not have a lot of money, land, or education, many of them feel they have a good social status. Their occupation of farming is seen as prestigious because they can grow their own food and help others. Income, land ownership, and education don't have a strong link to how peasants see their social status. Most peasants in the study feel they are in the middle or higher social status categories. Overall, the peasants in the villages feel united and proud of their occupation as farmers.
