High intensity grazing leading to grassland degradation, new quantification methods revealed.
High intensity grazing can harm grasslands. Many studies have looked at how grazing affects ecosystems, but not enough focus has been on the grazing activity itself. By analyzing 141 papers, researchers found that grazing pressure can be defined in two ways: by the number of livestock in the ecosystem or by the impacts on the grasslands. Different methods were used to measure grazing pressure, with varying standards based on grassland productivity. Small experiments controlled factors like livestock numbers, while remote sensing looked at ecosystem responses to grazing. The study showed that quantifying grazing pressure varies across different grassland types and is linked to grassland productivity.
