Pit-latrine surge in Malawi threatens groundwater quality and public health.
Pit-latrine usage in Malawi is increasing rapidly, with 500,000 people gaining access to sanitation each year. This leads to the construction of 93,000 new pit-latrines annually. However, pit-latrines can contaminate groundwater with faecal waste and other pollutants like plastics and oils. Sustainable waste management practices, such as pit-latrine emptying, are not widely adopted. This poses a significant public health concern as groundwater contamination is already happening in Malawi and is expected to worsen with the growing population and efforts to eliminate open defecation.
