The study looked at how the ground above coal mines breaks and leaks water. They used experiments and computer models at Lingxin Coal Mine. When the coal mining is not deep enough, the ground cracks a bit, covering 20% of the mining area. But when the coal mining is deep enough, the ground cracks a lot, covering more of the area.
