Women in Uganda Struggle to Secure Land Rights Amid Legal Confusion
In Uganda, there are two different ways that land ownership is handled: traditional customs and laws introduced during British colonialism. The British favored a system of formal land rights, while traditional systems were seen as outdated. This led to conflicts over land ownership, especially for women in Apac District, Northern Uganda. The British intended to replace traditional land ownership with a modern system, but colonialism ended before this could happen. This has left women's land rights vulnerable to being lost between the two systems.
