The article explores how digital technologies can create environmental and social value, and how to finance this value creation through business models. By studying 130 smart city services in Switzerland, the researchers found that different ways of creating value influence whether users are willing to pay for a service. This, in turn, affects how organizations capture value. They developed a framework with 12 types of business models for digital sustainability, showing the diverse ways organizations can operate in smart cities to create and capture value.
