Solar Farms May Worsen Climate Change by Increasing Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Photovoltaic arrays can impact greenhouse gas emissions in natural ecosystems. A study found that PV arrays affect air, soil, and vegetation, leading to increased CO2 and N2O emissions but minor CH4 uptake. Soil temperature and moisture drive these emissions. The global warming potential from PV arrays was 8.14% higher than ambient grassland. Previous studies may have underestimated PV arrays' GHG footprint by 25.46–50.76%. Considering PV arrays' impact on ecosystems is crucial to accurately assess their contribution to reducing greenhouse gases.
