New design boosts weir discharge capacity by 18.8%, aiding flood control.
Climate change has made many old weirs inefficient at handling large amounts of water. To improve this, a new method was tested on a labyrinth weir. By adjusting certain dimensions, the discharge capacity was increased by up to 18.8% compared to a regular labyrinth weir. The key factors were keeping the notches area small, the notches length less than a third of the total length, and the notch depth less than 30% of the sidewall depth. This new approach could help old weirs handle more water effectively.
