Clogged drainage holes in highways threaten stability and safety of slopes.
Groundwater can cause problems for highway slopes, so good drainage is crucial. A study looked at why drainage holes in slopes get clogged. They found that fine particles from the soil block the holes, and chemicals and biological factors make it worse. Calcium carbonate crystals also clog the holes, especially on geotextiles. Acid can help remove the crystals. The clogging process has two stages, each with its own characteristics.
