Externalities are important in ecological debates. This paper questions calling them external and looks at how economics and capitalism shape this idea. The roots of externalities go back to political economists like Mill and Sidgwick, not just Marshall and Pigou. Methodological individualism is key in understanding externalities, but capitalism also plays a big role in shaping them.
