Outsourcing university research boosts innovation but not patent success.
The article explores how outsourcing university research commercialization tasks to a specialized technology transfer office can impact technology transfer performance. The researchers found that universities that outsourced to an established tech-transfer office of another university saw increased engagement in research commercialization and more new discoveries and provisional patents. However, there was no significant increase in patent applications, granted patents, license deals, or start-ups created. Despite this, post-outsourcing, there was evidence of sustained advantages in some technology transfer activities, suggesting a learning effect from working with a more experienced tech-transfer office.
