Corruption and Protectionism Cripple West African Economic Integration
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) faces challenges in promoting regional integration in West Africa. Member states producing similar raw materials have more trade with industrialized countries than within ECOWAS. Checkpoints on Community highways hinder free movement of people, goods, services, and capital. Despite efforts, trade within West Africa remains low. To improve, ECOWAS members should enforce Treaties/Protocols in their territories.
