Weed Control Timing Crucial for Maize Yield in Sudan
Weeds competing with maize can seriously reduce crop yield. A study in Sudan found that allowing weeds to grow alongside maize for more than 2-6 weeks after planting led to significant losses in cob length, weight, grain number, and overall yield. In one season, maize yield decreased by 82% when weeds were present throughout the growing period. This shows that controlling weeds during the critical 2-6 week period after planting is crucial for maximizing maize production.
