Food waste composting slashes greenhouse gas emissions, saving millions of tons.
Food waste composting can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Researchers measured emissions during composting and found that methane and nitrous oxide emissions were low, while carbon dioxide emissions were higher. Composting food waste resulted in 38-84% lower emissions compared to landfilling. By 2025, California could potentially save 1.4 million metric tons of CO2 emissions through food waste composting. Increasing turning during the composting process and reducing watering could further lower emissions.
