Boosting Potato Genetic Gain: Genomic Selection Outperforms Traditional Breeding Methods
Genomic selection was studied in potato breeding to improve genetic gain for traits. Computer simulations using real potato data showed that using genomic selection instead of traditional selection methods led to higher genetic gain. Implementing genomic selection at specific stages in the breeding process can greatly enhance genetic gain. The optimal allocation of resources for maximizing genetic gain with genomic selection differs from traditional breeding methods. Breeders can improve short-term genetic gain in potato breeding programs by adjusting selection and phenotyping intensities based on these findings.
