Public Trust in Climate Science Shapes Acceptance of Global Warming
The study examined how much trust Australians have in climate change predictions by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Researchers surveyed people's trust and beliefs about human-caused climate change using specific IPCC projections about global warming and coral reef decline. They found that most Australian adults trust the IPCC projections, and this trust is linked to accepting human-caused climate change. Even though political views influence beliefs about climate change, trust in IPCC projections helps to lessen this influence. People who accept human-caused climate change generally trust the IPCC projections, but some skeptics see scientists' predictions as unreliable or exaggerated for personal gain.
