High Open Defecation Rates in Rural Ghana Demand Urgent Action
Access to clean water, toilets, and good hygiene is important for health. A study in rural Ghana looked at water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in two districts. They found that most households had access to clean water, but many shared toilets and some still practiced open defecation. There were differences between the districts in toilet facilities and water sources. Most people reported washing their hands, possibly due to COVID-19 concerns. The study suggests that households need more toilets to reduce open defecation.
