Sympatric speciation can happen without a geographical barrier, in a mixed population. A new model based on resource adaptation shows that ecological selection, not sexual selection, drives this process. Assortative mating based on relevant traits leads to adaptive responses, and high disruptive selection strength isn't always necessary for speciation in sympatry.
