Expanding climate policies could drastically reduce emissions, but some countries lag behind in key sectors.
Having more climate policies helps reduce emissions by 2030, regardless of whether emissions are going up or down. Different countries need different types of policies to improve their mitigation efforts. Countries with increasing emissions lack policies in energy-demand sectors like buildings and transport. Countries with stagnant emissions need better coordination across sectors. All countries that aren't reducing emissions have fewer policies to reduce energy and material demand. Even though there are more policies in place, countries can still do more to use all available options for reducing emissions.
