PFAS pollution in wastewater threatens environment, calls for advanced treatment.
PFAS are chemicals found in wastewater from industry and products. A study in Sweden looked at how PFAS move through a wastewater system and treatment plant. They found different types of PFAS in different parts of the system, like from an industrial source or firefighter training facility. Short-chain PFAS were in the wastewater, while long-chain PFAS were in the sludge. The treatment plant didn't remove PFAS well, with only 10% removed on average. This means 7000 mg of PFAS were still being released into the environment every day. Better treatment methods are needed to remove PFAS effectively.
