The study looked at why people fish for blue swimmer crabs and black bream in Western Australia. Crab fishers mainly fish to eat big crabs, while bream fishers fish for the challenge of catching big bream. Most crab fishers keep their catch to eat, while bream fishers often release the fish they catch. Crab fishing is seen as easy and cheap, while bream fishing requires more skill and patience. Crabbing is considered as important as other outdoor activities, while bream fishing is seen as more important because of the challenge of catching big fish.
