Europe's Energy Crisis: Rethinking Policies for Secure and Sustainable Supply
The article discusses how recent conflicts between Russia and Ukraine caused a global crisis, affecting energy security in Europe. Before the conflict, Europe heavily relied on Russian energy sources like oil, gas, and coal. Countries like Germany were focused on reducing fossil fuels and increasing renewable energy. However, the Russo-Ukrainian War showed the risks of depending on Russian energy. The paper suggests that energy legislation needs to prioritize energy security by ensuring a balanced mix of energy sources, diverse suppliers, and effective stockpiling. It also highlights the importance of managing energy supply stability even during peaceful times. To improve energy security, the Energy Act should be given priority, defining and regulating the concept of "energy security" more comprehensively than current laws that focus mainly on sustainability and stability.
