Households could slash heating costs and emissions with new heat pump technology
A new type of heat pump was designed to warm homes using less electricity. This heat pump can work with medium or lower quality heat sources, making it more environmentally friendly and cost-effective. Researchers created a simpler way to build the heat pump, ensuring it can be used in regular houses. Their tests show that it can produce 5.7 kW of heat with a system efficiency of 1.4, using high temperatures to heat homes while keeping the heat pump temperature low. When tested in a cold climate like Finland, it saved 20.1 MWh of energy yearly, reduced emissions by 4143 kg of CO2 annually, and cut costs by 1629 euros per year. This means that this heat pump could be a good choice for heating homes while also being good for the environment and saving money.
