Ozone Layer Repair Threatened by Unregulated Chemical Releases
The ozone layer's recovery might take longer than expected due to increasing levels of harmful chemicals like CFCs since 2010, despite their ban. These chemicals could be released during the production of other ozone-friendly substances like HFCs. The Montreal Protocol, which helped phase out CFCs, does not restrict their use as chemical ingredients. Additionally, unregulated compounds like bromoform can also contribute to ozone depletion.
