New method reveals stormwater quality decline in detention basins.
A simple method using plastic buckets with holes was developed to monitor stormwater quality in detention basins. The method collected water at different pool elevations during storm events. Results showed that total suspended solids decreased from first flush, while total phosphorous and E. coli varied between storm events and pool elevations. The passive monitoring system produced reliable results, was cost-effective, and reduced exposure to hazardous conditions.
