Biofuels may worsen climate change without global land-use regulation
This research focuses on how different policies impact the emissions related to using bioenergy, which is important for fighting climate change. By using a special model, they discovered that having rules for using land can help control these emissions. They found that if both energy and land sectors have the same emission price, biofuel emissions stay low. Without land rules, emissions from biofuels go up a lot over time. To reduce total emissions, it's crucial to cover most carbon-rich lands globally. Just putting a price on bioenergy use doesn't lower emissions as much as needed. If land rules aren't strict and quick enough, bioenergy might not help fight climate change like we hoped. This study shows the importance of having clear rules and protecting carbon-rich areas to cut down on harmful emissions when using bioenergy.
