Foliar selenium boosts antioxidant levels in red clover, enhancing plant health.
The study looked at how different forms and amounts of selenium affected red clover plants. They used sodium selenite and sodium selenate at doses of 2, 4, and 20 mg.m-2 in a controlled environment. After applying selenium to the plants, they found that the selenium content in the clover increased significantly, especially at the highest dose. Selenate was more effective at accumulating selenium than selenite. Both forms of selenium had a positive impact on the level of reduced glutathione, with selenate also increasing phytochelatin 3. Surprisingly, even at the highest dose, the selenium did not harm the plants.
