GIS reveals soil salinity crisis threatening Uzbekistan's agricultural lands.
Soil salinity is a big problem in Uzbekistan, affecting almost half of the irrigated lands. This is mainly due to natural factors like poor drainage and salty groundwater, as well as human activities that increase salt levels in the soil. A study in the Arnasay district of Jizzakh province used GIS technology to monitor soil salinity and create maps showing where salt-affected soils are. The research found that inefficient irrigation practices are leading to more salt in the soil, which reduces soil quality and productivity. GIS technology is a useful tool for keeping track of salt-affected lands.
