Elderly Women in China Falling Behind in Workforce Participation Rates
The study looked at the ability of people aged 50 and above in China, Japan, and South Korea to work based on their health. It found that the health of older people in these countries has gotten better over time, but their participation in the workforce hasn't increased as much. The gap in workforce participation between older women in China and Japan/South Korea has grown. In 2020, Chinese individuals aged 50-64 had a higher capacity to work compared to 1982, with men at 16.96% and women at 23.5%. Japanese and South Korean men had smaller increases at 4.53% and 12.32%. By 2020, Chinese men and women in this age group had worked about 2.54 years more than in 1982, while Japanese and South Korean men had worked 1.85 years and 0.68 years more.
