Revamped building facades slash energy use and cool classrooms in tropics
Passive design strategies can improve the energy efficiency of educational buildings. By modifying shading and glazing properties on the facades, the study found that adding vertical fins and changing glazing properties can reduce heat transfer and indoor temperatures. The retrofit design strategies resulted in a 6.04 W/m2 reduction in Overall Thermal Transfer Value and a 0.835°C decrease in indoor temperature. These findings help architects determine the best way to upgrade educational building facades in tropical climates.
