New soil classification system revolutionizes understanding and utilization of purple soils.
Purple soil in the Eastern Sichuan Basin, China was classified using Soil Taxonomy (ST) and the World Reference Base for Soil Resources (WRB). 18 soil profiles were analyzed, revealing that WRB and Chinese Soil Taxonomy (CST) systems were better at distinguishing purple soil than ST. WRB considered more soil characteristics like layer thickness and soil color, while CST included lithologic characteristics, enhancing subgroup differentiation.
