EU citizenship expands beyond national citizenship by focusing on cross-border mobility and participation rights. The main concern is the equality of status for young people in rural areas of East Central Europe. The chapter suggests three recommendations for researching citizenship in these regions: recognizing differences between urban and rural citizenship, providing direct social rights, and understanding EU citizenship as both nested and enacted.
