Urban soil quality boosted by organic matter amendments, benefiting communities.
Organic matter like compost, biochar, and biosolids can improve soil quality in urban areas by increasing soil carbon and nutrients. A study found that using these amendments led to an average 3.6% increase in soil organic matter. Biochar had the biggest impact, increasing soil organic matter by 6.5%. Biosolids had the smallest increase but provided more nutrients. Overall, adding organic matter to urban soil can enhance soil quality for gardening, landscaping, and recreation, benefiting the community and storing more carbon in the soil.
