China Sperm Banks Struggle to Meet Genetic Testing Demands for Donors
Genetic testing of sperm donors in China is important for ensuring healthy offspring. A survey of 26 sperm banks showed that all donors undergo karyotype analysis, but only a few banks offer more advanced genetic testing like whole-exome sequencing. Most banks collect family history and some accommodate special genetic test requests from recipients. Genetic counselors are present in most banks to help donors understand their test results. The study suggests the need for more extensive genetic testing and the employment of trained genetic counselors in sperm banks to better serve the Chinese population.
