Chennai's Air Quality Improves During COVID, But Gaseous Pollutants on Rise
Air pollution in Chennai city was studied from 2017 to 2022. Particulate matter (PM 2.5 & PM 10) decreased, while gaseous pollutants SO2 and NO2 slightly increased in 2021 compared to 2017. PM levels exceeded air quality standards in 2017-2019 but improved in 2020-2021. The Air Quality Index (AQI) decreased from 120 to 93 in Chennai. Pollution levels were highest in winter and lowest in summer. PM10 was the main pollutant, followed by NO2, PM 2.5 & SO2, with variations in different areas and times. PM levels decreased, but SO2 and NO2 increased.
