Beef production fuels alarming greenhouse gas surge in Greece, urgent action needed
The beef sector in Greece emits greenhouse gases (GHGs) that contribute to climate change. Researchers studied GHG emissions from beef production in Greece from 2011 to 2021 and explored ways to reduce emissions. They used different methods to estimate emissions, finding that total emissions increased over time. At a local level, some regions showed higher emissions. By analyzing the number of livestock animals, researchers were able to predict emissions. Different strategies to reduce emissions were tested, but they only led to moderate changes. More actions are needed to make the beef sector in Greece more sustainable and reduce its impact on the environment.
